Warriors' Kristaps Porzingis to 'step away,' prioritize health

Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis announced on Friday that he is stepping away from basketball because he is physically unable to play at the level he expects of himself, though he stressed this is not an official retirement. Porzingis signed a two-year, 40 million dollar contract extension in late June and intended to play this season, but his body did not respond as he tried to ramp up for training camp, and he told general manager Mike Dunleavy two days before the first practice that he would not report. The Warriors are withholding payments on his 20 million dollar salary, which neither Porzingis nor the players' association is contesting, and they have no plan to void his contract.
