A fan fiction site got hacked. Its users are panicking

Archive of Our Own, the fan-run home of millions of fan-written stories, was hacked and taken offline, leaving its readers and writers unable to reach the site and unsure when it would return. The outage hit a community that treats the archive as a library: people keep years of saved bookmarks, favorite stories, and works in progress there, so a shutdown feels less like a website going down and more like the doors of a beloved library suddenly locking. Users flooded social media with worry about whether their stories and collections were safe while the volunteer team behind the site worked to assess the breach and bring the archive back.
