What to know about the presidential wiretapping scandal rocking Indonesia

Indonesia is in the grip of a wiretapping scandal that reaches the very top of government. President Prabowo Subianto's phone conversations may have been spied on after his chief of staff, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, was arrested along with two senior police officers, accused of entering phone numbers, including the president's, into the police's official surveillance system without proper procedures. Discovered last week after a tip-off, authorities believe it stretches back to 2025, when Listyo was national police chief. Politicians, journalists and businesspeople were also reportedly targeted. The case could amount to treason, and it is widely read as the latest blow in the fracturing alliance between Prabowo and predecessor Joko Widodo. Source: BBC News, November 6, 2026.
